How are syllables counted?
Each word is scored by counting its vowel groups (runs of a, e, i, o, u, y), then adjusting for a silent trailing "e" (so "make" is one syllable) while keeping "-le" endings that form their own syllable (so "apple" and "table" are two). It is a fast estimate that matches most everyday words; unusual spellings and some names can be off by one.
How do I check a haiku?
Write each of the three lines of your haiku on its own line. The tool shows the syllable count beside each line and, when you have exactly three lines, checks them against the traditional 5–7–5 pattern — turning green when it matches.
Is my text private?
Yes. Counting runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server; it autosaves only in your own browser so your draft is there when you return.
