How to convert a number to words

Three steps — though really it happens the moment you type.

  1. 1

    Type or paste your number

Enter any number in the box — whole numbers, decimals, negatives, and thousands-separator commas all work (e.g. 1,234,567.89).

  2. 2

    Read the words instantly

The number is spelled out in English as you type. There is no convert button and no waiting — the result updates on every keystroke.

  3. 3

    Copy the result

Click Copy to put the words on your clipboard, ready to paste into a cheque, invoice, contract, or document.

🔒

Your numbers never leave your device

Many online converters send whatever you type to a server to process it. This one does not. The entire conversion is a small piece of JavaScript running in your browser tab — nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored. That also means it keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask about converting numbers to words.

Is the number to words converter free?+

Yes — completely free, no signup, no watermark, and no usage limit. It runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to pay for.

What is the largest number it can convert?+

It handles numbers up to the sextillions (that is 22 digits before the decimal point) — far beyond anything you would write on a cheque or invoice. Larger values are rejected rather than shown incorrectly.

Does it convert decimals?+

Yes. Digits after the decimal point are read one by one after the word "point" — for example 3.14 becomes "Three point one four". This is the standard way to read decimals aloud.

Does it use the Indian system (lakh, crore) or the international system (million, billion)?+

This converter uses the international short scale — thousand, million, billion, trillion. It does not output lakh or crore. If you need the Indian numbering system, that is on our roadmap; for now this tool is aimed at English words in the million/billion format used on international documents.

Can I use it for cheques and invoices?+

Yes — spelling out an amount in words is exactly what cheques, invoices, and contracts require. Type the amount, copy the words, and paste. Note it spells the plain number; add your currency word (for example "rupees" or "only") yourself.

Does my number get sent to a server?+

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser tab in JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere.

Does it work offline?+

Once the page has loaded, the conversion works without an internet connection — it is pure client-side code with no server calls.

Does it work on mobile?+

Yes. The input opens a numeric keypad on phones and the layout adapts to small screens. Tested on iOS Safari and Chrome on Android.

How are negative numbers handled?+

A leading minus sign is read as "negative" — for example -42 becomes "Negative forty-two". Zero is never shown as negative.
