Why Malayalees Struggle with English Pronunciation: The 'Th' and 'V' Sound Guide

Updated: March 20267 min read

Malayalam is a phonetic language, but English is not. Many sounds in English don't exist in the Malayalam alphabet, which is why even fluent Malayalees can sometimes have a heavy "Malayalam accent" when speaking English.

The 'Th' Sound Confusion

In Malayalam, we have 'ത' (tha) and 'ദ' (da). But the English "Th" in words like "Think" or "There" requires placing your tongue between your teeth.

  • Incorrect: Pronouncing "Think" as "Tink" (using the 'ട' sound).
  • AI Tip: Place your tongue lightly against your upper teeth and blow air. Our bot provides audio models to help you hear this.

The 'V' and 'W' Mix-up

Malayalam speakers often use the same 'വ' sound for both 'V' and 'W'.

🦷 V (as in Van): Top teeth touch bottom lip.

👄 W (as in Water): Lips form a circle (o-shape).

Practice with Voice Feedback

Reading about pronunciation is one thing—hearing it is another. Our Malayalam English Tutor uses natural AI voices to demonstrate these sounds. In Phase 2, the bot will even listen to your voice and tell you exactly which sound you need to adjust.
