Mastering English Tenses: A Practical Guide for Tamil and Telugu Speakers
One of the most confusing parts of English for Tamil and Telugu speakers is the use of auxiliary verbs like "am, is, are, was, were." In many Dravidian languages, the verb ending itself changes, making these extra words feel redundant. Let's simplify them.
The Present Continuous Mistake
Tamil: "நான் போறேன்" (Naan poren).
Telugu: "నేను వెళ్తున్నాను" (Nenu velthunnanu).
These can mean both "I go" (habit) and "I am going" (now). In English, you MUST use "am/is/are" for things happening right now.
❌ Incorrect: I going to office.
✅ Correct: I am going to the office.
Past Tense vs. Present Perfect
Many learners struggle with the difference between "I ate" and "I have eaten."
🍎 Past Tense: Used when you mention a specific time (I ate 1 hour ago).
🍎 Present Perfect: Used when the time is not important, but the action is finished (I have eaten).
